Twitter Attack Aftermath: The Social Media Famine Ensues for Some on Day 2

Picture 79So, what did we do before Twitter existed? If you haven’t all ready read, blogged or tweeted about the social outage. The Social Media Attack’s were for some considered a global state of emergency.  It even was the top trending topic amongst cell phone users. Forcing us to go back into the social tech Stone Age, changing the way we communicate, at least for the day. Imagine having to actually use the phone to call your loved or friends.

NBA star Ron Artest even took to the telephone (and UStream ) so he could stay in touch with fans without having Twitter available to him. Some people did not know what to do with themselves during the moments of wall writing & tweeting web silence. Leaving them to ponder alone to themselves the meaning of life, instead of sharing with their followers.

Twitter, Facebook and LiveJournal spent yesterday battling a DDOS attack that started around 6 am California time. Twitter and LiveJournal lost the cyberspace battle. While Facebook stayed mostly online but was clearly under strain. According to Mashable.com, CNET reports that a single individual’s accounts on these social networking sites may have been the primary target that ignited the attacks on some of the largest social sites.

So how did it all start, some link the attacks back to the Georgia & Russia crisis. According to Facebook’s chief security officer Max Kelly, a blogger in the Republic of Georgia failed prey.  Sounds like a one of those government CIA, NSA blockbuster flicks doesn’t it! However, on Twitter’s latest blog post, Biz stated, “As to the motivation behind this event, we prefer not to speculate…. Nevertheless, today’s massive, globally distributed attack was a reminder that there’s still lots of work ahead.”

Now, nearly 24 hours later, Facebook and LiveJournal appear to be performing normally. But the Twitter is down completely and has been for the last few hours, with no FailWhale insight. Twitter stated yesterday that , “Site latency has continued to improve, however some web request continue to fail.” An hour ago, Twitter updated its status of the attacks aftermath, citing that some users are still experiencing a degrade in service. Making them unable to communicate with Twitter’s API or tweet via SMS.

However, many of the popular third party services like Tweetdeck, what some consider a second line of tweeting defense to get there tweeting fix, has been experiencing technical difficulties. TweetDeck has not been allowing some users to  leave tweet messages. Leaving Twitter fanatics saying”Houston we have a problem!” Everyone  is in a panic, because they can’t make lunch plans or see Ben Stillers latest status update.

failwhaleBut don’t panic, Twitter is doing all it can to fix the DDOS attack (Denial of Service Attack) aftermath and are working tireless to restore order in the Twittersphere. So until then, I guess we have to go a few more hours or another day with out satisfying our chirping blue bird addiction. Perhaps us tweeples should make this an official holiday “Get Work Done Day”.
