Tr.im a URL Shortener Bids Farewell & Bites the Dust

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
With the rise of Twitter and 140 character restrictions another industry rose to the forefront. Url shortening services like Bit.ly, tinyurl.com and tr.im take long cumbersome url’s and shortens them down to small tweetable links. However, Bit.ly is the default url shortner for Twitter & preferred among users.  With its recent demise, Tr.im contributes its downfall to their inability to monetize url shortening and Twitter’s favoritism toward Bit.ly.  Bit.ly tried to step in offering to archive their url’s indefinitely, but Tr.im declined stating they would rather sell the company, but as of late they have not gotten any offers. As Bitly appears to be the clear market winner it will be interesting to see if Twitter makes a move to acquire Bit,ly.  (source: mashable & techcrunch)
