Myspace to acquire iLike

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Picture 143Myspace is close to acquiring the popular social music service iLike for close to $20 million.

iLike is a social music recommendation service that launched in 2006. With the success of Myspace music, by acquiring iLike; myspace will lock down it’s leading position for most popular online identity for bands.

What’s interesting about this story is that iLike is deeply integrated into Facebook as one of it’s most popular applications with 10 million users monthly. With Myspace being facebook’s main competition we will have to see how this plays out. Why didn’t facebook just buy iLike?

Southeastern Conference: Social Media Banned from College Stadiums

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Picture 136The Southeastern Conference is looking to release its final version of it’s new media policy.

We hope they ease up a bit on the final policy, because… In short it’s looking to ban social media usage at all SEC games

That means no twitter, facebook, youtube, twitpic or any other service that would compete with authorized media coverage of the event.

We understand that the SEC wants to protect it’s CBS contract, but how is this enforceable? We think you are shooting yourself in the foot by censoring the most important people – your fans!

Social media & the fans are really only spurring on the interest & good memories for the games! We’re shaking our heads on this one, what do you think? Comment below & let us know.

The Facebook Roadtrip – Friends are more than Status Updates

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Facebook user Graham Smith w/ the help from his buddy Josh Baron decided to take a roadtrip for his grad school thesis project & actually reconnect with his facebook friends.

Many of these “friends”  he hasn’t seen in 15 years. Many of his friends started to become acquaintances & many acquaintances became strangers. So Graham took a somewhat awkward roadtrip to connect in real life.

In total they traveled over 1800 miles met up with friends from a lifetime & delivered real life facebook messages.

Facebook Just Got Liter: Introducting Facebook Lite !

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

liteinviteFacebook is launching a simpler  & faster version of its platform. With its recent acquisition of Friendfeed with real-time search, Facebook is really shaking up the social world. Facebook Lite looks a lot like a Twitter stream; you can see you & your friend’s status updates. However, It does not appear to be integrating Friendfeed in its lighter version. The navigation bar includes wall, info, friends, photos & video. Whether or not it’s to compete with Twitter, the purpose of Facebook Lite is to accommodate slow broadband speeds. In turn,  users will be able to quickly write on friends wall, send messages & build their social network. A handful of Facebook users were invited to test it out.
